THE PITTS SPECIAL S2B
The Pitts Special S2B remains the most popular aircraft in the world. Conceived as a small single seater aerobatic aircraft immediately after World War II, the aircraft has gradually been improved over the years. Today, the most popular version of the aircraft is the two seater S2B model, that is powered by a 260 h.p. engine, three times the power of the original prototype.
The Pitts Special has a metal fuselage frame that is covered by a synthetic and durable fabric. The wings are made of wood, are wire braced for strength, and are covered by the same material that the fuselage is covered with. The braced biplane configuration allows for extremely high strength for very little weight.
The engine has an inverted fuel system, which means that the engine is able to draw fuel through the fuel injector unit when the aircraft is upside down. A specially installed lubrication system ensures that oil pressure is maintained irrespective of the attitude that the aircraft may be in.
The aircraft has very powerful flight controls that enable the machine to respond quickly to the pilot’s inputs. This is a pre-requisite for any aerobatic aircraft. Coupled with a very high power to weight ratio, the Pitts Special S2B remains one of the most competitive, capable and versatile aircraft in the world today. As important as the strength and performance of the aircraft is, so is the safety and security of the pilot. A five point harness holds the pilot firmly into his seat. Two additional straps are provided for additional safety. During the course of an aerobatics routine the pilot will pull or push as much as 7 positive "g" and minus 4 "g". During the application of positive "g" the pilot is pushed into his seat. With negative "g" the pilot is thrown out of his seat into the aircraft’s straps.
The Pitts Special has an endurance of two and a half hours. Its cruising speed is between 265 and 270 kilometers per hour, making a trip from Johannesburg to Durban possible in under two hours. There is a small baggage compartment in the aircraft which is of sufficient size to hold a change of clothing.
The smoke that is issued from the underside of the aircraft during aerobatic displays comes from a special type of mineral oil that is injected straight into the engine’s exhaust pipes.
The pilots communicate with each other by means of hand signals or by two way radios.
The nature of the flying that the aircraft is exposed to is very taxing on both the engine and the airframe and the maintenance requirements for the machine are very stringent.
